Hope everything is well and that the winter has been good to you all.

In Västervik our team is now working full on with the maintenance of the HiQ Trimaran and even if the winter storms caused us some problems we are now up to full speed again. The Trimaran is in the shed and will be shining bright and ready to race in a couple of weeks.

As you all might be aware of the Nokia Oops Cup will take a break during 2007 but HiQ Sailing Team will sail on and do a state of the art racing, record attempt s  and hospitality sailing summer again - of course.

Some corner stone race s/ dates (with reservation for minor changes):

4-6 May, Nacka Strand Waterfront Days, Stockholm

12 May, Round Lidingö Race, Stockholm

14-15 June, Helsinki-Tallin Record Attempt, Helsinki

Close to a mid-winter catastrophe

Yesterday, Sunday evening at 09.15 p.m. my mobile phone rang...

It was Andreas. He said; -"Pelle, things are not going our way - just received a telephone call from the ship yard in Västervik (where we winter store our Trimaran)....- the storm has destroyed our shed, the roof just exploded in the extremely strong winds, it could very well be the case that our Trimaran is badly damaged....I do not have any more information for the moment, we just have to go there right now!"

Said and done, we were on our way and 15 minutes later Andreas, Olle, Henrik and I were on our way down to Västervik in 150 km/h (at least)...snow storm and gusts up to 40 meters per second. We made some phone calls on our way down there - I can tell you! To the fire department in Västervik, to the police (to check out the road conditions on E22) to the rescue service command centre, to friends of ours down there, to the MD of the boat yard, yes as a matter of fact just about to each and everyone who possibly could do something to affect the situation positively. Better try to be safe than sorry and proactively do as much as possible before we arrive ourselves - that was the simple plan.

However, after approximately two hours of crazy driving we arrived  mid night in Västervik and the sight which met us at the boat yard was devastating - a "war zone". Our state of the art boat shed (at the size of three tennis courts) was just blown into pieces. And in the middle of this total mess, darkness and blizzard stood our blue and white  60 foot Trimaran!

The first site gave us the impression that the HiQ Trimaran most probably was so badly damaged that the 2007 season could be in the danger zone. On with the gear and the forehead torches to do a first damage control. The rescue team from the fire department had just left the sight and as far as we could see they had made a tremendously good job with the huge tarpaulin roof which was blown into pieces. They had cut off big parts of the roof and just had it blown in the wind (later on we found it something like 300 meters away from there). We managed to get hold of big stone blocks which could be rolled in place on the windward side of what was left of the shed. Everything to be able to affix ropes and to be able to prevent more damage and a total collapse of the remaining steel construction.

Believe it or not, but after a couple of hours of work and control it stood clear that the damages on the Trimaran was unbelievably small standing in relation to the most likely scenario. OK, we have like  2 00 hours of extra work and it will take a big bag of buck to get on top of things but in the current circumstances taken into consideration it seems like someone up there just hold a protecting hand over HiQ Sailing Team!

The day after (earlier today) we moved the  Trimaran out of what was remaining of the shed. We transported the slightly damaged mast to the mast work shop. We cleaned up the yard around the shed and reallocated all our equipment to another repository. Work-work-work.

Now it's 00. 30 Tuesday, back in bed , family being asleep and tomorrow we start off with the insurance and repair work. Thanks guys for doing a good job.

The trimaran safe in the shed in Västervik

The HiQ Trimaran was lifted up without any problems last week at the Marström compound in Västervik. The team have a long winter worklist and will spend a lot of time with the boat to keep it in a competitive shape.

HiQ Sailing Team won Nokia Oops Cup 2006
Nokia Oops Cup, round 11, Final 19/8

Swedish victory in Nokia Oops Cup 2006. On Saturday Klabbe Nylöf and his crew on the 60 feet trimaran HiQ won the overall victory in the nation competition after eleven tough races. The victory was his after winning the offshore race between Malmö and Kiel on Wednesday and through his third place in Kiel City Race today. But margin was small, just point ahead of second place Knut Frostad on Nokia Academy.
- We have worked so hard for this, so it feels great that it lead to a victory, Klabbe said.
Three years ago, Klabbe succeeded to win Nokia Oops Cup, but the last two years has been number two and three after Knut Frostad.
- It feels like revenge to get a victory again. Two years in a row we have had problems with our boat, but this year everything worked great. We have sailed well and fast, and we have been in good shape with our material and a good backup shore organisation, Klabbe Nylöf explains his victory in Nokia Oops Cup 2006.
But it was a hard fight all the way to the dockside in Kiel. Just one point divides HiQ from Nokia Academy. HiQ took six victories and Nokia five.
- Our best sail race was the course race in Sandhamn, while the City Race in Kiel was the worst. It's no use to try to sail conservatively and save the material, that's when everything goes bad, like it did today, said Klabbe, ending in third place.
But the victory was secured last Wednesday when HiQ finished an hour before the Norwegian after a 330 nautical miles hard offshore race from Malmö to Kiel. HiQ had an average speed of 15 knots over the 21 plus hours and logged top speeds of 36 knots.
- It was really tough, but we had no problem, he said.
It was much worse for him and the crew during the race between Helsinki and Copenhagen, a couple of weeks ago. Klabbe would rather forget about it, HiQ ran into no wind for several hours and finished 12 hours after Nokia and TietoEnator Audi.
- We have been able to turn up our speed whenever we have run into trouble, and we haven't had any real problems. It has been a really great Nokia Oops Cup, exciting and tight races and better than earlier years, Klabbe commented.
In front of almost ten thousand people on the docks of Kiel, it was Nokia Academy who took the victory after five heats in Kiel City Race. But it didn't help, Knut Frostad ended on 25 points, just one point after Klabbe and ten ahead of TietoEnator Audi and Thomas Johanson. Knut's year in Nokia Oops Cup has been loaded with problems.
- Of course I am disappointed. This year has been frustrating, everything has broken, dagger boards, sails, and foils, just about everything. We have sailed boat that wasn't ours, we got it late and didn't have time to check it out thoroughly and then you don't know how it has been maintained earlier.
In the Offshore Race from Horten to Gothenburg the dagger board broke right off.
- It took a long time to get it fixed and right. We have done mostly repairs through Nokia Oops Cup. But we have had some fun victories as well, Knut explains, like winning Gotland Runt (Round Gotland Race) and the Offshore Race from Helsinki to Copenhagen, then we did everything right.
Thomas Johanson, skipper on the Finnish TietoEnator Audi, ended on third place in Nokia Oops Cup, but he was still happy that his team had improved in the end of the cup.
- We have performed really well, winning eight out of nine starts; the ninth was a false start. In today's race we were best in all five starts, Thomas explains.
TietoEnator Audi's best race was definitely the second place in the offshore race to Copenhagen.
- In particular, we have improved our teamwork after the Helsinki races, and then we had an important discussion about our roles onboard. That helped.

Final results Nokia Oops Cup 2006
1. Klas Nylöf, Sweden, HiQ, 26 points
2. Knut Frostad, Norway, Nokia Academy, 25 points
3. Thomas Johanson, Finland, TietoEnator Audi, 15 points
